B Week: Building, Bubbles, and the Bishop

A B week activity for (almost) all ages In our second segment of the Alphabet Path, I’m thinking that I need to make some tweaks to our process.  This is what the boys like about the Alphabet Path: They like having the structure of “A week,” “B week,” “C week” to look forward to. They like the hands-on activities I’ve set out for them. They like the more traditionally Montessori/practical life activities I’ve set out for them.  Chipmunk especially is…

Learning Highlights from Last Week

Some highlights from the last week or so… Chipmunk turned five!  He got some real tools for his birthday and has been spending a lot of time pounding nails into wood scraps, and screwing and unscrewing wood screws. He’s also been fascinated by Can You See What I See?: Toyland Express: Picture Puzzles to Search and Solve.  This book has large two-page spreads of a wooden toy train moving through various created landscapes or rooms.  One of the landscapes is…

Combined Work in Our New Year

We’re three weeks into our new school year already, and after some revisions to my ideas of how I thought this year ought to go, we seem to be settling into a rhythm, which is in some ways more unschooly than in the past (I’m not requiring anything of my 1st/2nd grade twins, for instance, but I am going to try to make sure that I strew a lot of academic work in their way), but also a lot more……

This Week at Our House: Books

Summer is here, and the boys are beginning to get a little bored as the temperature goes up.  This is the last week I’ll record for this school year, and as of July 1st, we’ll start our new year.  I’m looking forward to it.  Although I do very much enjoy gathering resources for the kids and poring through booklists, I do not enjoy trying to keep everything organized.  None of the clearing out and organizing is ever done before the…

Fossil Hunting at Coon Creek Science Center

Picture credit: K. Boord We made our second trip to Coon Creek Science Center in rural McNairy County, TN last Saturday.  The Science Center opens to members for one day a year.  On that one day, Museum members are allowed to come and dig through the proliferation of fossils that makes up the site. Volunteers dig a special pit and pile up the clumps of clay in a line for fossil hunters to dig through.  Photo credit: K.Boord  Once you…

The Past Three Weeks

I’m three weeks behind on learning reviews.   Week 1 (March something to March something else): I have a post started for a review of this week.  It’s called “Is It Over Yet”, and the post begins: “Also subtitled, “In Which Angela Contemplates Duct-taping her Four Year Old to a Chair, or How to Use a Baseball Cleat to Destroy a Fire Ant Invasion in Your Van.” Yeah, that week wasn’t so great.  Andy was out of town for most of…
